Welcome to NTNU!

This page contains information on what to do as a new student at NTNU and a newcomer to Norway. The general information on this list applies to all students. However, specific instructions—such as how to book appointments—are intended only for students in Trondheim. Students in Gjøvik and Ålesund should contact their local International Office for guidance.

As you navigate this page, please keep in mind whether you are an exchange student a degree student (admitted to an international 2-year master’s at NTNU, or part of a double-degree/joint-degree program). When reviewing immigration procedures, also consider your citizenship. Students in Trondheim who are logged in will see information customized for them based on these two categories.

Most information on this page will also be provided during the Orientation Week. If you are still unsure about what to do afterwards, you are welcome to contact the Office of International Relations.

New Arrivals at NTNU

Below are the necessary steps you must follow as a new student at NTNU. It is possible to complete some steps before physically arriving at NTNU, but only after you have received the log-in credentials for Studentweb.

## Activate your user account

Your user account (also known as FEIDE account) gives you access to NTNU digital services such as email, learning management system, Wifi, student ID app, etc.
A few weeks before the semester start, you will received an email containing your user name and how to set a password. If you do not receive it by the last week before the term starts, please contact the IT support services at hjelp@ntnu.no.

To set a new password and gain access to your user account: 
1. You must first create a password [here ](https://bas.ntnu.no/international/ "here "). 
2. Follow the prompts to complete the process.

## Log in to Studentweb

Studentweb is a portal where you can find information about your studies, register for courses each semester, create invoices (if applicable), find results of your exams, or download your transcript of records, etc.

After you have access to your user account, you can use "FEIDE" option to log into Studentweb.
Once you are no longer a student at NTNU, you will be able to continue accessing Studentweb using the 11-digit ID number and 4-digit PIN code sent before the start of the term.

In Studentweb, click your name, and choose “Profile”.
Make sure that all information is correct.

If there is an error in your name or date of birth, please submit an inquiry via the NTNU Help portal.

## Pay the semester fee

All exchange students are exempt from paying the semester fee

All degree students must pay the semester fee.
This includes students admitted to a 2-year master's program, joint-degree students, double-degree students. TIME-double degree students are only required to pay from their second year. 
To pay the semester fee, you must:
- Generate an invoice in Studentweb and pay through your bank using the correct KID number (it is not possible to do so via Studentweb).
- Wait for the payment to be registered in Studentweb before activating your user account (may take up to 2 days after payment).

## Sign up for your courses and exams

You must sign up for both courses and exams and register for each semester via Studentweb yourself.

For exchange students: If you are not able to enroll in a course for which you have been pre-approved (either by the International Office or the course coordinator), please contact the department responsible for the course for assistance. You can find their contact information on the individual course page.

For exchange students: If you wish to sign up for a course for which you have not been pre-approved:
 + If the course is open, you will be able to add it to your study plan on Studentweb.
 + If the course is not open, you will need to contact the course coordinator to see if you can join the course.

For students admitted to the 2-year international master's program: You will see the compulsory and optional courses for your study program in Studentweb. If you wish to take courses outside of this, please contact a study advisor at your department.

## Finalize semester registration

You must finalize the semester registration on Studentweb after signing up for courses and exam (similar deadlines).
Failure to do so may result in suspension of your student status.
Note that you must still register for your semester in Studentweb even if you are not taking any courses.

## Download Student ID App and Order Student Card

Student ID app is a proof of your active student status and qualifies you for discount. Student Card gives you access to buildings/rooms, including the library and printing services.

## Special needs facilitation

If you have a chronic illness, a (learning) disability, or an injury, NTNU can provide special facilitation of lectures, studying spaces, or exams if needed.

New Arrivals in Norway

Below are the necessary steps you must complete after you have arrived in Norway. 
Note that some information is intended only for student in Trondheim.

## Arrival Registration

Upon arrival in Norway and after activating your NTNU account, you must register your arrival with us. This ensures that you receive the necessary information about mandatory immigration procedures.

## Police Appointments (Applies to all except Nordic nationals)

For EU/EEA/Swiss students: All students with non-Nordic citizenship who are staying in Norway for more than 3 months must report to the police. 
(For students in Trondheim only) NTNU organizes group appointments every semester. It is preferred that you attend this. You will automatically receive the booking link once you have registered your arrival. You can also see [Immigration and Arrival Procedures](https://www.ntnu.edu/lifeandhousing/trondheim/immigration-and-arrival-procedures "Immigration and Arrival procedures"). If you are not able to make these group appointments, you must book your own.

For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students: All students with non-Nordic citizenship who are staying in Norway for more than 3 months must report to the police. 
(For students in Trondheim only) NTNU organizes group appointments every semester. It is preferred that you attend this. You will automatically receive the booking link once you have registered your arrival. If you are not able to make these group appointments, you must book your own.

For Nordic students: Students with Nordic citizenship are exempt from this step.

## Report Your Move to Norway
If you are staying in Norway for at least 6 consecutive months (typically means if you stay for more than 1 semester at NTNU), you must report your move to Norway with the Tax Office (Skatteetaten).

For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students:
Most students who are traveling to Norway for the first time <b>do not</b> have to do so AFTER their police appointment. To be sure, please ask the police during your appointment.

For EU/EEA/Swiss students:
You must book an appointment with the Tax Office AFTER your police appointment. See more at [Skatteetaten](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/national-registry/moving/to-norway/  "Skatteetaten").

For Nordic Students:
You must book an appointment with the Tax Office as soon as you arrive. See more at [Skattetaten](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/national-registry/moving/to-norway/  "Skattetaten").

## Mandatory Health Check
For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students: Students with citizenship from some countries (regardless of country of current residency) are required to complete a screening for tuberculosis after arriving in Norway. The test is free of charge and mandatory.

If this applies to you, you will receive a link to book an appoinment for the health check **after having registered your arrival at NTNU. **

## Residence Permit
For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students: Normally after the police appointment, you will receive a residence permit which gives you the right to stay in Norway until the end date on the permit. This permit will be sent via postal mail. The police will inform you where your permit will be sent to.

## Registration Certificate
For EU/EEA/Swiss students: During the police appointment, you will be issued a registration certificate.

## Norwegian National Identity Number/ D-Number

As a temporary resident in Norway, you may qualify for either (not both) a National Identity Number (fødselsnummer) or a D-number. Either number gives you access to certain services.
Your eligibility for (if any) number depends on your citizenship, duration of your stay, whether you work, among other things.

If you are eligible for either number, you will only receive them after having arrived at NTNU and having completed the necessary immigration procedures.

## Bank Account

Typically, you can only open a bank account if you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months, and have been issued a residence permit/registration certificate and a National Identity Number/ D-number. See more at [Bank Accounts and Working](https://www.ntnu.edu/lifeandhousing/trondheim/bank-accounts-and-working "Bank Accounts and Working").

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss students: if you have deposited money to NTNU for visa-purpose, you can request for remaining funds to be transferred to your new bank account. Your local International Office will inform you of this process.

## Working in Norway

If you plan to work/have an income in Norway, you will need to order a Norwegian Tax Card from the Tax Office (Skatteetaten).

For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students: An approved study permit/ student residence permit may allow you to work up to 20 hours/ week during the school year and full-time during the holiday. 
After the police appointment, you will automatically receive a Norwgeian ID – or D-number from the Tax Office.

For EU/EEA/Swiss students. There are no restrictions on how many hours you can work during your stay as long as it does not interfere with your studies.
