NTNU Go - Getting started

This page contains two lists covering what you need to do upon arriving for your studies, both as a new student at NTNU, and as a new international in Norway. Most of this information applies only to students in Trondheim. Students in Gjøvik or Ålesund will receive information from their local International Office.

Which information is relevant to you depends on what type of student you are (exchange or full-degree), and whether you are from the EU/EEA. If you log in to NTNU Go, you will only see the information that applies to you, and be able to mark the tasks you've completed!

New at NTNU

These are the steps you must follow as a new student at NTNU. Some actions can be completed before you arrive in person, but only after you have received your log-in credentials for Studentweb.

## Activate your user account

Your NTNU user account gives you access to NTNU's digital services such as your student e-mail account (and other Microsoft 365 services), the course content management system BlackBoard, the on-campus Wifi and more.
A few weeks before the semester start, you will receive an e-mail containing your NTNU user name and instructions on how to set your password. If you do not receive within one week before the start of the term, please contact NTNU IT support services at** hjelp@ntnu.no**.

To set a new password and gain access to your user account:
1. You must first create a password **[on this page](https://bas.ntnu.no/international/ "Click here ").** 
2. Follow the instructions on that page to complete the process.

## Log in to StudentWeb

Studentweb is the Norwegian national student portal. This is where you register for courses each semester, find the results of your exams, and where you can download your transcript of records, etc.

Once you have activated your NTNU user account (see above), you can use "FEIDE" option to log into Studentweb.

When you first log in to Studentweb, click your name in the top right corner, choose “Profile”, and verify that all your personal information is correct.

If there is an error in your name or date of birth, please submit an inquiry via the [NTNU Help portal](https://i.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/English/NTNU%20Hjelp "NTNU Help portal"). ## Pay the semester fee

The *semester fee* is a statutory fee that students pay every semester to the Student Welfare Organization (Sit).

The fee does not go to NTNU, but to Sit, and helps finance the student welfare system, including the housing, health, sports and cafeteria services.

Exchange students do not pay the semester fee, but degree students do. If you are logged in to NTNU Go (Trondheim students only), you will see below whether or not **you** specifically must pay the semester fee.

As an exchange student from a partner university, you are exempted and do **not** need to pay the semester fee.

As a degree student, **you must pay the semester fee.** This includes students admitted to a 2-year master's program, joint-degree students, double-degree students. TIME-double degree students are only required to pay from their second year.

**To pay the semester fee, you must:**
1. Generate an invoice in Studentweb
2. Pay the generated invoice through your bank, using the correct KID number (You cannot pay directly in Studentweb, you must do so via your bank). The KID number is the number identifying that the payment is coming from you, so make sure this number is correct.
3. Wait for the payment to be registered in Studentweb (may take up to 2 days after payment is received). Only when the payment is listed as 'registered' in Studentweb will you be able to activate the Student ID app.

## Sign up for your courses and exams

You must sign up for *both* courses and exams, and register for each semester, via [**Studentweb**](https://i.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/English/Student+Web "Studentweb").

If you are [logged in to NTNU Go](https://go.it.ntnu.no/userlogin/ "logged in to NTNU Go"), more information tailored to your situation will appear below.

As an exchange student, it is your own responsibility to ensure that your exams do not overlap. If they do, you will have to find a different course with an exam that does not overlap. You will find the exam date for each course on the course page under 'Examination'.

If you are not able to sign up via Studentweb to a course for which you have been pre-approved (by a course coordinator or the Unit for international relations) please contact the department responsible for the course. You can find their contact information on the relevant course page.

Want to sign up for a course for which you have *not* been pre-approved?
- If the course is open, you sign up for it yourself, via Studentweb.
- If the course is not open, you will need to contact the responsible department to ask if you can join the course and whether they can sign you up.

As a degree student at a master's programs, you will see the compulsory and optional courses for your study program in Studentweb. If you wish to take courses outside of these, please contact a student advisor at your programor  department.

## Complete the semester registration

You must register for the semester on Studentweb after signing up for courses and exams. This is obligatory, and failure to register in time may result in loss of your student status.

## Student ID App and Student Card

The *Student ID app* is a proof of your valid student status, and qualifies you for student discounts. The NTNU *Student Card* is your access card for campus buildings and room, and acts as your NTNU library card. It also allows you to use the printers on campus.

## Special needs facilitation

If you have a chronic illness, (learning) disability, injury or other factors that may limit your abilities, you have a right to necessary facilitation. NTNU can provide facilitation of lectures, physical studying spaces, exams and more if needed.

These are the steps you must follow to get settled in Norway and ensure you can stay legally for the duration of your studies. 
Most steps are only possible after you have physically arrived.

## Arrival Registration

Upon arrival in Norway and after activating your NTNU account, you must complete NTNU's arrival registration to receive the important information about immigration procedures.

## Registering with the police
Most students, after arriving in Norway, have to aquire a residence permit (non-EU/EEA citizens) or registration certificate (EU/EEA/Swiss citizens) from the local police. If you are logged in to NTNU Go (Trondheim students only) you will see information below about what you, specifically, need to do. You will also receive personalized information by completing the Arrival Registration (see above).

As a citizen of a Nordic country, you **do not** need to register with the police, and can skip this step.

As a citizen of an EU/EEA country (or Switzerland), you **must register with the police** if you are staying more than three months. Please ensure that you have submitted an online application for a study permit at **UDI.no** before attending your appointment with the police. Make sure to bring all required documents as outlined by UDI.
Booking of police appointments for NTNU students is coordinated by the Unit for international relations: [Click here to book an appointment](https://innsida.ntnu.no/forms/view.php?id=669958 "Click here to book an appointment"). You must have activated your NTNU account before booking.

As a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country, you **must register with the police** if you are staying more than three months. Please ensure that you have submitted an online application for a study permit at **UDI.no** before attending your appointment with the police (not necessary if you already received your student visa). Make sure to bring all required documents as outlined by UDI.

These instructions are only valid for Trondheim students. Students in Gjøvik or Ålesund should contact their local international office.

## Report Your Move to Norway
If you are staying in Norway for at least 6 consecutive months, you must report your move to Norway with the Norwegian Tax Authority (*Skatteetaten*). If you are logged in to NTNU Go (Trondheim students only), you will see information below about what you, specifically, need to do. You will also receive this information by completing the Arrival Registration.

For non-EU/EEA/Swiss students:
Most students who are traveling to Norway for the first time <b>do not</b> have to do so AFTER their police appointment. To be sure, please ask the police during your appointment.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens must book an appointment with the Tax Authoirty AFTER their police appointment. See more at [Skatteetaten](https://www.skatteetaten.no/en/person/national-registry/moving/to-norway/  "Skatteetaten").

## Mandatory Health Check
Students with citizenship from countries with a *high* or *very high* occurrence of Tuberculosis (countries on [this list](https://www.fhi.no/en/id/TB/countries-tuberculosis/ "this list")) are required to complete a screening for tuberculosis after arriving in Norway. The test is free of charge and mandatory.

## Norwegian National identity number/ D number
As a temporary resident in Norway, you may qualify for either a *National identity number (fødselsnummer)* or a *D number* (not both). Both numbers will give you access to most public services.
Your eligibility for one of these numbers depends on your citizenship, duration of your stay, whether you work, and other factors.

If you are eligible for either number, you will only receive them after having arrived at NTNU and having completed the necessary immigration procedures.

## Bank Account
Typically, you can only open a bank account if you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months, and have been issued a residence permit/registration certificate and a National identity number/ D number. See more at [Bank Accounts and Working](https://www.ntnu.edu/lifeandhousing/trondheim/bank-accounts-and-working "Bank Accounts and Working").

Students from non-EU/EEA countries: if you have deposited money to NTNU as part of the visa application, you can request for the funds from this deposit to be transferred to your new bank account. The Unit for international relations will inform you about this process.

## Working in Norway
If you plan to work/have an income in Norway, you will need to order a Norwegian Tax Card from the Tax Office (Skatteetaten).

For non-EU/EEA students: A valid study permit/residence permit for studies may allow you to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during the holiday.
*If you are staying more than 6 months*: you will automatically receive your Norwegian identity number from the Tax Office after your police appointment.
